In an attempt to defeat claims of substandard performance, the two-passenger LN7 could now have a high-output version of the
CVH 1.6-liter four, hooked to a five-speed manual gearbox.
A multi-port fuel-injected four also was available to improve
idling and low-end torque.
New options included a four-way adjustable driver’s seat and shift indicator light.

Mercury’s 1984 factory sales catalog promised “a new direction in automotive technology.”
That meant cars that were exciting to drive, pleasing to the eye, “combining innovative
design, aerodynamic styling and meticulous engineering.”
The two-seater LN7 never had found an adequate number of customers and dropped out after 1983 due to
sluggish sales. Many of the distinct styling characteristics, such as the "bubbleback" window
were later adopted to the EXP's design.
Mercury’s 1983 market share rose from 5.5 percent to 6.1 percent in two years,
with credit taken by Lincoln-Mercury General Manager Gorgon B. MacKenzie, who took over in 1981.
However, MacKenzie soon left Mercury to return to his former spot at Ford of Europe. The new General Manager was Robert L. Rewey, Jr.
