Quick Tips: Clean Up & Restoration

Here are some quick tips that we've put together to help you get your EXP looking sharp.

Cleaning Fogged Headlights
Looking to clear up those fogged headlights? You will have to seperate the lenses from the rest of the assembly first of all. Then you need to wipe out and polish the inside of the lense. JC Whitney sells universal headlight polishing kits that you can use to do this. Once you have it poished up use some silicon or a good sealer and put the lense back on. It would also be a good idea to polish the outside of the lenses because they can become pitted from road debris.

Aftermarket Foglights To Replace OEM lamps?
The Hella 450 is the same size as the OEM units, but much better output. The 550 will also fit in the opening, but it is tighter.

Cracked and Sundmaged Dashboard
Instead of trying to replace the entire dashboard, we recommend that you try the prodicts from Dash Caps and Coverlay Manufacturing. A number of our members have used these products with great success.

Putting In Back Seats
Since the floor pan of the EXP is the same as the Escort putting in a back seat is possible. There are a number of owners on that have made this modification. Removing the EXP’s rear cargo area carpet and the black plastic “tray” under the front section of it reveals the same seat mounting area as the Escort. As a result, the rear bench from an Escort can be fitted into the EXP. Be sure to attach the seat belts securely.

One thing to note: Because the EXP has a lower roof and faster roofline, anyone sitting in a rear seat will very little, if any, head room.

Replacement Body & Interior Parts
As with everything else; finding these replacement parts for the EXP & LN7 is quite challenging but we have been able to locate a number of vendors that do offer some replacement body parts. Please check out the Marketplace for a list. Anything else body related you will have to do junkyard hunting to find or see if someone has something for sale in the classifides section. You may also consider trying Car-Part.com, an online salvage yard search service.

Replacement Weatherstripping - Hatchback
Need to replace worn or damaged hatchback rubber seal but can't find a replacement? The weatherstripping for the mid-80's Mustang is a direct replacement, just a few inches longer. You can find it at JC Whitney. (Thanks to BarbMisty for this tip)

Removing Old Window Tint
Removing old window tint can be a pain, but a little straight amonia will make the job much easier. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and the tint comes right off. (Thanks to BarbMisty for this tip)

Bad Strut Towers Can Cost You Big $$$
The EXP and its Escort cousins all suffer a common problem where the rear strut towers can become severely damaged by rust, especially in northern states that use a lot of road salt in the winter.
